US warship cancels stopover in Hokkaido, Japan

Sapporo, January 12 (Jiji Press) – A stopover by an American warship scheduled for early February in Otaru in Hokkaido prefecture in Japan’s far north has been canceled, according to the Otaru municipal government.

The US military informed the city of the cancellation on Tuesday.

Although the US side has given no reason for the cancellation, it is believed that the coronavirus infection situation is behind the decision.

The US Navy destroyer USS Stockdale was scheduled to call in the port of Otaru for six days from February 6 to promote US-Japanese friendship. Up to 240 people were expected to visit the city.

The Otaru government was considering asking the US military to rethink the layover plan after cluster infections hit US military bases in Japan’s southernmost Okinawa Prefecture and Yamaguchi Prefecture in western Japan.
